2023 Scholarship Recipient

ChiWIP is excited to announce our second annual Scholarship for the Advancement of Womxn in Law or STEM Graduate Studies! This $1,500 scholarship supports a womxn who has completed their first year of law school or graduate school studies in the fields of law, science, technology, engineering, or math and/or is a recent graduate thereof seeking professional testing/certification for the first time.  The scholarship recipient was selected based upon her exceptional academics, financial need, and demonstrated commitment to service of her community. We are pleased to announce that this year’s scholarship recipient is Shelby Yuan.

Shelby is pursuing a joint JD-PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University, with both degrees expected in 2025.  Shelby worked in high school as a research scientist in a lab at the University of Arizona. She continued her education at Harvard, where she earned a B.S. in Bioengineering, followed by an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University in 2022, on her way to an eventual joint JD-PhD program. She seeks a career in patent law, with a focus on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices. While at Harvard, she served as President of the Biomedical Engineering Society and member of Society of Women Engineers, and she initiated a mentorship program to encourage women seeking STEP research. She continues to serve as a mentor now in her PhD program. In her abundant spare time, Shelby is pursuing the Abbott World Marathon Majors (to run each of 6 participating marathons), and speaks Chinese, Mandarin, and Spanish.

We are delighted to announce Shelby as the recipient of the prestigious ChiWIP Scholarship for the Advancement of Wxmen in Law or STEM Graduate Studies. Shelby's dedication to academic excellence and her outstanding contributions to the community, particularly in the advancement of women and girls, make her a truly deserving recipient of this honor. Congratulations, Shelby!
